family-friendly films at the BFI London Film Festival

Posted on by

Next week is the beginning of the 56th BFI London Film Festival running from the 10th – 21st October.  As a film lover, I have always tried to catch a couple of films at the festival, and in the last few years I have taken ‘O’ to see something there too.  Here are this years family-friendly films to be seen at the festival.

Frankenweenie 3D

This is Tim Burton’s new film showing on the opening Gala night, so unfortunately tickets are all sold out.  It’s Burton’s take on the Frankenstein tale, with Victor, a young inventor brings back to life his beloved dog Sparky.

Ernest and Celestine

filmfestival_ernestandcelestine

A French animation about the friendship between a bear and a mouse.

Animated shorts for younger audiences.

filmfestival_animatedshorts

A selection of shorts from around the world.

The Great Bird Race

filmfestival_thegreatbirdrace

About a boy called Victor, who wants to win the bird watching competition and will stop at nothing to do so.

Kauwboy

filmfestival_kauwboy

10yr old Jojo turns to a jackdaw for comfort when he finds none at home.  This sounds like it may be a new ‘Kes’.

Legends of Valhalla – Thor

filmfestival_legendsofvalhalla

A young Blacksmith acquires a magic hammer and finds himself at war with some giants.

Le Tableau

filmfestival_letableau

An animation about the inhabitants of a piece of arts journey across other paintings.

Wolf Children

filmfestival_wolfchildren

Single mother Hana must bring up her wolf children away from the prying eyes of the neighbours.

Zarafa

filmfestival_zarafa

A giraffe makes an epic journey across the world.

We missed out on tickets to see Frankenweenie, but will be going to see Wolf Children as ‘O’ loves these Japanese animations.

thisisengland'86

this started on channel 4 last night at 10pm.  it’s a 4 part drama following on from the film ‘this is england‘ released in 2006 by shane meadows. the story centres around a group of young skinheads in england in the ’80’s.  it looks good and the soundtrack is great.  shane meadows is a self-taught film maker from the midlands.  as well as ‘this is england’, he has made films such as ‘twenty four seven’, ‘a room for romeo brass’, ‘somers town, and ‘le donk and scor-zay-zee’ to name a few.  all of which are worth watching and many star the wonderful paddy considine x

2 good french films that i’ve seen this year:

heartbreaker

directed by Pascal Chaumeil.  starring romain duris, vanessa paradis and andrew lincoln.

a rom-com that is funny,  stylish and romantic.

gainsbourg

directed by joann sfar, starring Eric Elmosnino who plays serge.

a portrait of the French singer Serge Gainsbourg (1928-1991).  loved it, great soundtrack x

badlands

1973 film by Terrence Malick

martin sheen and sissy spacek

Dramatization of the Starkweather-Fugate killing spree of the 1950’s, in which a teenage girl and her twenty-something boyfriend slaughtered her entire family and several others in the Dakota badlands.

I watched this, this afternoon whilst making  pom poms for Emily and Morgan’s wedding in France next month.  The film is shot beautifully – an old fave x
